Heat, humidity and changes in routine can require extra attention for dogs and cats. Simple measures help, but they do not replace an assessment when an animal shows worrying signs.
Water and a cool environment
Keep clean water available and check the bowl throughout the day. Offer ventilated, shaded places. Never leave an animal alone in a vehicle, even for a short time.
Older animals, very young animals, short-nosed breeds and pets with health conditions may have more difficulty coping with heat.
Walk at cooler times
Plan walks early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Touch the ground before leaving: very hot surfaces can injure paws. Take water and allow breaks.
When to seek advice
Heavy panting that does not improve, weakness, disorientation, vomiting or difficulty standing require immediate veterinary contact. Move the animal to a cool place while seeking guidance and do not give medication without advice.
In Pipa and the surrounding area, Dr Samira can advise on the next step and assess availability for home care.
